Characterization and failure Certification UNI EN 1090 for thermal cutting and drilling machines

As of July 2014, all manufacturers of structural components in steel and aluminium are obliged to obtain the UNI EN 1090 certification. Our laboratory helps to evaluate the various specifications imposed by the legislation and to draw up the necessary documentation to satisfy the adaptation of your activities to the standard UNI EN 1090-1 (Execution of steel and aluminium structures).

What is the UNI EN 1090 certification?

The UNI EN 1090 certification certifies the ability of companies engaged in producing steel or aluminium structures (for example metal carpentry) or building materials and products, to meet all the quality requirements of UNI EN 1090 Part 1, 2 and 3.
It is issued by a third party body called certification body and from 1 July 2014 it is mandatory to affix the CE marking according to UNI EN 1090-1 (Execution of steel and aluminum structures).
Certification according to UNI EN 1090 therefore allows the placing on the market of construction products within the EU.

What can Unilab do for you?

Unilab offers professional support to companies in obtaining the UNI EN 1090 certification.
We are able to meet the various specifications required by the legislation, in particular regarding the determination of mechanical and dimensional characteristics defined by the required class of execution (EXC). In particular, the Unilab laboratory offers the possibility of certifying the following categories of work subject to control and evaluation for CE marking.

  • Validation of thermal cutting machines: For those involved in thermal cutting, it is necessary to periodically check the quality of the cutting surfaces that must comply with the indications of the ISO 9013 standard and depends on the EXC of the component. During the evaluation, the hardness of the free surfaces and the roughness and perpendicularity values of the surface affected by the cut will be analyzed. The standard requires a surface check, and not to exceed certain maximum values.
  • Validation of drilling machines: The standard clearly regulates the tolerances for drilling by drilling, punching or thermal cutting. The holes made must be checked from a geometrical point of view, whereas the tolerances for the holes and eyelets depend on the nominal diameter of the bolts to be used. The laboratory is responsible for measuring the size of the hole obtained and evaluating the methods of execution, determining the taper of the hole and the hardness of the material at the cut.
  • Validation of machines for forming processes: namely bending, pressing and forging with hot and cold processes. The regulation states that these processes must not in any way damage or alter the physico-chemical characteristics of the material: It therefore sets specific limits for hot and cold processes, depending on the types of steel to be formed and their profiles.
Who should obtain the UNI EN 1090 certification?

The requirement to obtain UNI ENI 1090 certification extends to all companies producing steel or aluminium products, which trade their products within the EU area, for example producers of:

  • Sections and profiles of various shape and size
  • Rolled (such as plates, sheets or strip) and grooved sheet
  • Steel and/or aluminium bars, forged from these materials, coated or uncoated with corrosion protection by or with anodizing surface treatments
  • steel components used in composite structures (for example: steel-concrete), and are involved in the processing of steel for PSC
  • metal carpentry
  • bolts, nails and brackets
  • pre-processed structural elements that will be subsequently laid
  • Structural elements, metal structures or parts of metal structures
